Registration & Rego

NSW rego expired — what to do next (and when it becomes a blue slip)

NSW gives you three months from expiry before your pink-slip renewal path closes. Miss that window and you're in blue-slip territory, plus an unregistered vehicle permit to legally drive to the inspection.

Registration & Rego · 3 min read

Rego lapses happen — a missed email, a change of address, an inspection deferred one too many weekends. What matters is understanding exactly what you can and can't do from that point, because the wrong step can turn a $179 pink slip into a $500+ blue slip plus a fine.

Inside the 3-month grace window

If your rego expired less than 3 months ago, you can still renew via the pink slip path. But you cannot drive the car for any reason other than driving to a booked inspection or a mechanic. Any other trip is uninsured (CTP is void) and unregistered — a fine and a demerit are both on the table.

Past the grace window

Once you cross the 3-month line, three things change. First — you now need a blue slip, not a pink slip. Blue slips are only done at designated AUVIS workshops. Second — you legally can't drive the vehicle at all without an Unregistered Vehicle Permit from Service NSW. Third — you'll need to re-establish CTP green slip cover and pay the registration fee from scratch (there's no partial credit for the lapsed period).

Getting an unregistered vehicle permit

Apply through Service NSW online or in person. You'll need proof of identity, the vehicle's rego papers, and a valid reason for the trip (getting an inspection, moving the vehicle to a garage, driving to a workshop). Permits are issued for a single trip or for a short period. They come with a temporary CTP cover for the trip only.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Can I still drive on the day the rego expires?
You can drive on the last day of registration — but from the next calendar day, the vehicle is technically unregistered.
How much does a blue slip cost?
The regulated minimum fee is around $78 but real-world costs are usually higher depending on the workshop and vehicle.
Will an unregistered vehicle permit cover me if I have an accident?
Only for the specific trip and duration listed on the permit. Any other use isn't covered.
