Green Slip vs Pink Slip NSW 2026 — The Two Documents You Actually Need to Renew Rego (Explained)

The two "slips" NSW drivers confuse most often are the green slip and the pink slip. Different companies issue them, they cover completely different things, and you need both to renew rego on an older car. Here's a plain-English breakdown of what each does, what each costs in 2026, and the order to buy them in.

Pink Slip Basics · 10 min read

NSW registration is a bundle of separate transactions the government stitches together into one renewal. Two of the pieces confuse almost everyone the first time they buy a car: the green slip and the pink slip. Same colour-coded naming convention, completely different products, different companies, different prices. This guide walks through both, the order to buy them, and the four traps that stop rego renewals dead.

The 15-second summary

  • Green slip = CTP (Compulsory Third Party) personal injury insurance. Bought from any of 6 licensed insurers. Legally required to renew rego on any registered vehicle. ~$450–$650 for a typical Sydney family car annually.
  • Pink slip = eSafety Check inspection. Done by an authorised AIS inspector. Required annually for vehicles 5+ years old. Regulated fee $51, our mobile $179.
  • You need both before Service NSW will renew rego on a car 5+ years old.

Green slip in depth

What it actually covers

CTP (Compulsory Third Party) insurance covers personal injury caused by your vehicle in an accident. If you hit someone and they're hurt, their medical costs, income loss and rehabilitation are covered through your CTP. If you're at fault, you're also entitled to some benefits under the current NSW no-fault CTP scheme (updated in 2017).

It does not cover:

  • Damage to your car — that's comprehensive insurance.
  • Damage to the other car — that's third party property damage insurance (a separate optional cover).
  • Theft, fire, storm damage — comprehensive insurance.

CTP is genuinely just people-injury cover. If you skid and take out a $200,000 Mercedes with no comprehensive on your side, CTP won't help.

Who issues green slips

Six licensed CTP insurers in NSW: NRMA, AAMI, GIO, QBE, Allianz and Youi. Use the SIRA CTP comparison tool (greenslips.nsw.gov.au) — it shows all six live quotes side by side. Insurers price differently on the same vehicle depending on your address, age, driving history and vehicle risk profile. Differences of $150+ between insurers on the same car are common.

Green slip cost in 2026

  • Sydney metro standard family car (SUV, sedan, 30s owner, clean record): $450–$600 annually.
  • Sydney metro young driver or high-risk vehicle: $700–$900+.
  • Regional NSW: often $50–$150 cheaper than Sydney metro.
  • Motorcycles: significantly different pricing structure — engine capacity based.

Use the SIRA comparison tool to see the actual number for your vehicle — insurer pricing varies weekly, so any "typical" figure is a rough guide.

Pink slip in depth

What it actually covers

A pink slip is not insurance and not a guarantee. It's a snapshot certification that the vehicle passes the Transport for NSW eSafety Check on the day of inspection — 25 items covering brakes, tyres, lights, steering, suspension, structure, seatbelts, glass, wipers and emissions. Valid 6 months from issue.

Who issues pink slips

Any AIS (Authorised Inspection Station) — workshops, dealer service departments, mobile independents. Every AIS inspector holds the same Transport for NSW authorisation. The pass/fail criteria are identical whichever provider you pick.

Pink slip cost in 2026

  • Workshop light vehicle: $51 regulated max — most workshops charge close to the cap, some $50–$70.
  • Our mobile flat rate: $179 inc GST — same 7 days a week, no call-out surcharge.
  • Motorcycle: $28 regulated.
  • Trailer with brakes: $40; without: $26.

The order to buy them in

Standard renewal on an existing car:

  1. Pink slip first — get the safety inspection done and lodged.
  2. Green slip second — quote and buy online. It takes 5 minutes on the SIRA comparison tool.
  3. Rego renewal last — Service NSW app or website. Both pink and green need to be current for renewal to process.

Buying a new-to-you used car:

  1. Green slip in your name first — you need it to transfer registration.
  2. Transfer rego at Service NSW.
  3. Pink slip at the next renewal (if the car is 5+ and doesn't have a current one).

The four common traps

Trap 1: buying green slip in wrong owner name

The green slip must be in the name of the registered operator. Buying a green slip in your spouse's name because they got a better quote won't help — Service NSW will reject the rego renewal because the CTP owner doesn't match the rego owner. Buy in the correct name from the start.

Trap 2: pink slip lodged too late for rego cutoff

Pink slip lodgement usually takes minutes but occasionally hours. Don't book the pink slip the same morning you're trying to renew rego before an interstate trip — leave at least a day.

Trap 3: green slip cancelled but rego still expected to renew

If you cancelled a green slip mid-year (e.g. planning to sell the car) then decided to keep the car, you need to re-purchase green slip before rego can renew. Cancellation doesn't automatically reverse.

Trap 4: comprehensive insurance mistakenly treated as green slip

Comprehensive insurance (NRMA, AAMI, Bingle etc.) does not include green slip. They are separate products even from the same insurer. You need both if you want full cover; green slip alone if you're comfortable being uninsured for own-vehicle damage.

Money-saving tips on green slip

  • Compare all 6 insurers via SIRA — differences of $100–$200 on identical cover are normal.
  • Update your address if you've moved — rating regions differ, and outer suburbs are often cheaper than inner.
  • Correct any misclassification of vehicle type — if the quote engine has your ute as a "commercial" when it's private use, you're paying more.
  • Consider the low-claim insurer options — Youi's phone-based questionnaire sometimes lands materially cheaper on lower-risk drivers.
  • Set a calendar reminder for the year — CTP pricing changes every 6–12 months and last year's winner may not be this year's.

Money-saving tips on pink slip

  • Compare workshop prices — some inner-suburb workshops charge $70+, outer-suburb workshops $51–55.
  • Book mobile if your time is worth more than $30/hour — the $30–$50 mobile premium disappears against saved travel and waiting time.
  • Pre-check the common fails (tyres, lights, wipers, brake pad thickness) yourself — a failed inspection you have to re-book costs more than a $10 pack of globes would have.
  • Book 3–4 weeks before rego expiry — leaves buffer for a fix and free re-inspection if needed.

What if you sell the car mid-rego cycle

  • Green slip — pro-rata refund available from the insurer once you cancel rego. Usually processed within 4 weeks.
  • Pink slip — non-refundable; it's an already-delivered service. The pink slip stays valid 6 months, and technically transfers with the car if it's still current when the new owner buys it, but is worth almost nothing to the buyer if the rego cycle is already partly used.
  • Rego — pro-rata refund on the rego portion also available from Service NSW.

Common misconceptions

  • "Green slip is the same as insurance on my car." No — green slip covers people injuries only, not your car.
  • "Pink slip guarantees the car is safe for the year." No — it certifies safety on the day of inspection, not for 6 months.
  • "I only need a green slip if my car is comprehensive." No — every registered vehicle needs a current green slip.
  • "My mechanic bundles green and pink slips." Mechanics don't sell green slips — those are insurance products from licensed CTP insurers only.
  • "Green slip prices are the same everywhere." No — differences of $150+ between insurers on the same car are common. Always compare.
Common questions

Frequently asked.

What's the difference between a green slip and a pink slip in NSW?
A green slip is compulsory third-party (CTP) personal injury insurance from a licensed insurer, ~$450–$650 a year. A pink slip is an annual vehicle safety inspection from an authorised AIS inspector, $51 regulated or $179 mobile. Both are required to renew rego on a car 5+ years old.
Do I need both a green slip and a pink slip?
Yes — Service NSW requires both to be current before rego renewal can process on a vehicle 5+ years old. Vehicles under age 5 still need a green slip but skip the pink slip.
Which do I buy first — green slip or pink slip?
On a renewal, get the pink slip first (it's the one that involves someone else's schedule). Buy the green slip online any time before renewal. The rego payment itself is the last step.
How much is a green slip in NSW?
Sydney metro standard family car: typically $450–$650. Young drivers or high-risk vehicles: $700–$900+. Regional NSW usually $50–$150 cheaper. Compare all six insurers via greenslips.nsw.gov.au.
Is a green slip the same as comprehensive insurance?
No — completely separate products. Comprehensive covers damage to your car (theft, storms, collision). Green slip covers personal injury to others. You can have one, both or neither, but green slip is compulsory to register the vehicle.
Can I get a green slip and pink slip from the same place?
No — green slips only from licensed CTP insurers (NRMA, AAMI, GIO, QBE, Allianz, Youi). Pink slips only from authorised AIS inspectors. Mechanics and dealers can't sell green slips.
Can I renew my rego without a green slip?
No — Service NSW system blocks rego renewal until a current CTP (green slip) is on record against the vehicle in your name.
What if I sell my car mid-year?
Green slip is pro-rata refundable from the insurer. Rego is pro-rata refundable from Service NSW. Pink slip is not refundable — it's a service already delivered.
Do I need a green slip if my car isn't driven?
Only if it's registered. Unregistered vehicles don't need a green slip. If you register the vehicle for any period, green slip is required for the whole registration period.
Can I switch green slip insurer mid-year?
Yes — cancel current CTP for a pro-rata refund and buy a new one from a different insurer. Just make sure a valid green slip is always current if the vehicle stays registered.
Does the green slip need to be in the same name as the rego?
Yes — the CTP must be in the name of the registered operator. Different owners on green slip vs rego will block the renewal.
Are green slip prices regulated like pink slip prices?
No — green slips are set by insurers in a competitive market (regulated by SIRA). Different insurers price the same car quite differently. Pink slips have a regulated maximum fee under the Transport for NSW AIS scheme.
