The free Service NSW rego check is the fastest way to see the status of any NSW-registered vehicle. Anyone can use it — you don't need to own the car or be logged in. This makes it the standard first-step check for anyone about to renew their own rego, verify a used car they're about to buy, or track down whether a friend's forgotten-about second car is still legal to drive.

How to run the free rego check

1. Go to nsw.gov.au/nsw-check-rego (or google "NSW check rego" — it's the top result).
2. Enter the plate number, no spaces, in the plate field.

What the results actually show

Interpreting every status line

"Registered"

Vehicle is currently registered and legal to drive up to and including the expiry date shown. Rego was renewed properly. Green slip (CTP) is current by implication (Service NSW can't process rego without it).

"Unregistered"

Rego has expired and hasn't been renewed. Not legal to drive. Recovery pathway depends on how long ago (3-month grace for pink slip pathway, past that blue slip).

"Cancelled"

Registration was formally cancelled (e.g. sold interstate, scrapped, plates returned). Reinstatement is possible in some cases but not automatic — treat as if the car has never been registered in NSW.

"Inspection required for renewal: Yes"

The vehicle is over age 5 and needs a current eSafety Check before the next renewal will process. Book one within 6 months of expiry.

"Inspection completed: Yes"

A pink slip has been lodged and is current against this rego. If the issue date is recent (within 6 months) you're good for renewal. If older, the pink slip has lapsed and needs redoing.

"Written-off vehicle register" flag

The vehicle has been recorded as an insurance write-off at some point. Doesn't mean it's not legal — many written-off vehicles are repaired and re-registered — but it dramatically changes the negotiation for a used purchase. Investigate further with a full PPSR check.

Before any test drive or physical inspection of a used car, spend 30 seconds running the free rego check on the plate. What you're looking for:

• Match — plate matches the make, model and colour the seller advertised. Mismatch = stop, walk away.

Pink slips are valid 6 months from issue. Add 6 months to the issue date to get the expiry date. If the current pink slip issue date is within the last 6 months, it's still current.

Wait 30 minutes and refresh — payment processing can lag. If still unregistered after an hour, log into your MyServiceNSW account to see whether the payment went through and whether there's an outstanding block (unpaid fines, CTP mismatch, address issues).

The plate isn't found

Check for typos. Confirm the vehicle type dropdown matches (a motorcycle plate searched as "Passenger" won't return anything). If the plate genuinely isn't in the database, it may be interstate or genuinely unregistered/cancelled.

Privacy and abuse
