Service NSW Pink Slip Lookup — How to Check Your eSafety Check Is Lodged (2026 Step-by-Step)

Since paper pink slips were retired, the whole system runs electronically — the inspector taps submit, Transport for NSW records the pass, Service NSW sees it, and you renew rego. Fast when it works, confusing when it doesn't. Here's exactly how to verify lodgement, how long it should take, and every recovery path if the pink slip doesn't appear on your Service NSW record.

Registration & Rego · 10 min read

Since NSW moved fully to electronic eSafety lodgement, your pink slip lives on the Transport for NSW system from the moment the inspector uploads it — usually within a couple of minutes of the pass being marked. That means no paper receipt to carry, no photo to email your insurer, no phoning workshops to confirm they submitted anything. But it also means you need to know how to verify the lodgement worked, because until it appears against your rego record, Service NSW physically can't renew your rego. This guide walks the exact lookup path, the timing you should expect, and every recovery step if something's missing.

The fastest lookup — Service NSW app

If you already have the Service NSW app installed and logged in to a MyServiceNSW account with your vehicle linked, the lookup is 30 seconds:

  1. Open the Service NSW app on your phone.
  2. Tap Services (bottom navigation).
  3. Tap Vehicle registration.
  4. Tap the vehicle in question. If you have several vehicles, they're listed here.
  5. Look for the inspection status line. When a pink slip is lodged you'll see "Inspection: Passed" or "eSafety Check: Complete" with the issue date next to it.

If you see that line, you're done — the inspection is on the system and rego renewal is the next tap.

Desktop lookup (Service NSW website)

The same lookup on the web at service.nsw.gov.au:

  1. Log in with your MyServiceNSW account.
  2. Under My Services choose Vehicle registration.
  3. Click Manage registration on the vehicle you want to check.
  4. Under Inspection details you'll see the eSafety Check status and issue date.

Desktop tends to load slightly faster than the app if you're on wifi and gives you a bigger view of the details. Result is the same.

The check-rego-status public tool (no login required)

If you don't have a MyServiceNSW account — for instance you're checking a family member's car — Transport for NSW publishes a free rego status check at nsw.gov.au/nsw-check-rego. Enter the plate and vehicle type; the tool returns:

  • Registration expiry date.
  • Whether the vehicle is currently registered.
  • Whether an inspection is required for the next renewal.
  • Whether that inspection has been completed (with issue date).

It's the same underlying data as the app, without needing to log in. Convenient for a quick sanity check.

How long lodgement takes

In normal operation, the pink slip appears on the Service NSW record within 2–5 minutes of the inspector tapping submit. In slower stretches (peak Friday afternoon, or if the AIS portal has a brief outage) it can take up to an hour. On any working day it should be visible within a few hours of the inspection.

If it's been more than 24 hours since a passing inspection and you still don't see it on Service NSW, something has gone wrong and you should act (recovery steps below).

What to do if the inspection isn't showing after 24 hours

  1. Confirm you're looking at the right vehicle. On multi-vehicle accounts it's easy to check the wrong plate. Double-check the last three digits of the plate on your rego papers against the app.
  2. Refresh the app (pull down to reload) or log out and back in. Cached data occasionally hangs.
  3. Contact the inspector directly. Any AIS station keeps records of the day's submissions; they can re-lodge or re-send if the original submission bounced. Reputable stations resolve this in one phone call.
  4. Call Service NSW on 13 77 88. They can look up the vehicle on the back-end system and confirm whether the pass has hit their records, and if not, escalate to Transport for NSW to check the AIS portal.
  5. If your rego expires imminently and the pass hasn't landed, request the inspector to re-submit and, if necessary, apply for a short-term unregistered vehicle permit through Service NSW to keep you legal while it's sorted.

The three reasons lodgement genuinely fails

  • Portal outage at the inspector's end at the moment of submission. Rare but real. The inspector's tablet queues the submission but sometimes the queued attempt doesn't clear when the portal returns. Re-submission fixes it.
  • Wrong VIN or plate entered by the inspector on the ticket. The pass is lodged, but not against your vehicle — Service NSW can't match it up. The AIS station has to correct the record.
  • The inspector hit "save draft" instead of "submit". Genuinely happens — usually caught within the day but occasionally overnight.

In every case the resolution is a phone call to the AIS station that did your inspection. That's one of the reasons we recommend keeping the inspector's contact details from your booking confirmation — you may need them.

Renewing rego once the pink slip is showing

As soon as the pink slip is visible on your Service NSW record, rego renewal is a straight sequence:

  1. In the app or website, open the vehicle's rego page and tap Renew registration.
  2. Confirm your CTP (green slip) is current — Service NSW checks this automatically. If your green slip has lapsed, you'll be prompted to buy or renew one first through any CTP insurer.
  3. Review the rego fees and any weight or heavy-vehicle surcharges that apply.
  4. Pay by card, PayID or PayPal. Rego is renewed on the spot; a digital receipt lands in your email.

The whole payment process takes under two minutes once the pink slip is showing. If you prefer to hold off — you can renew any time before expiry (or up to 3 months after, under the grace period) — the pink slip stays valid for 6 months, so there's no urgency once it's lodged.

Where the electronic pink slip lives (and who can see it)

Your pink slip record lives on the Transport for NSW AIS database. It's visible to:

  • You, via MyServiceNSW.
  • Service NSW staff for rego processing.
  • Police, via ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) on patrol vehicles — they see registration and inspection status when they scan your plate.
  • Insurers, on request, when verifying a claim on a vehicle that should have been roadworthy at the time of an incident.

You don't need to send anything to insurers pre-emptively. If they need to verify roadworthiness at a claim, they lodge a request with Transport for NSW.

Do you need a paper copy of the pink slip?

Not for Service NSW or rego renewal. Not for police. Not for insurance. The only reason to keep a paper or PDF copy is your own peace of mind — some drivers like to file the inspection report so they can compare the fail/advisory list year-on-year. If you want one, ask the inspector to email you the report at the time of the inspection. We do this by default.

What to do if a workshop won't confirm lodgement

A rare but real issue: a workshop tells you it's been submitted, but the app still doesn't show it, and the workshop is dodging follow-up. First call Service NSW to confirm what they can see; if the pass genuinely isn't on their system, and the workshop is uncooperative, you have three escalation paths:

  1. Contact Transport for NSW directly on 13 22 13 — they hold the AIS records and can force a lookup on the workshop's submitted work.
  2. Lodge a complaint with the NSW Fair Trading or Transport for NSW consumer team if the workshop has taken payment for an inspection they didn't lodge.
  3. Book a fresh inspection with a different AIS station and treat the wasted first inspection as a lost cost. Recover it through your bank via a chargeback if you paid on card.

We don't have this problem because our inspections lodge from the driveway before we leave — you can literally watch the confirmation come back on the Service NSW app while we're still packing the tools away.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

How do I check if my pink slip has been lodged with Service NSW?
Open the Service NSW app → Services → Vehicle registration → tap your vehicle. If lodged you'll see "Inspection: Passed" with the issue date. Alternatively use the public rego check at nsw.gov.au/nsw-check-rego without login.
How long does it take for a pink slip to show on Service NSW?
Usually 2–5 minutes from when the inspector taps submit. In slower periods up to an hour. If it's been more than 24 hours after a confirmed pass, contact the AIS station that did the inspection.
What if my pink slip isn't showing on the Service NSW app?
First refresh the app and confirm you're viewing the right vehicle. If still missing after 24 hours, contact the AIS station that did the inspection — they can re-lodge or correct any data-entry errors. As a last resort, call Service NSW on 13 77 88.
Do I need a paper copy of my pink slip?
No — the pink slip is purely electronic in NSW. Service NSW, police and insurers all access the record via Transport for NSW's AIS database. A paper or PDF copy is only useful for your own records.
Can I renew my rego before the pink slip is lodged?
No — Service NSW's system checks for a current eSafety Check before accepting rego renewal. Once the pink slip is lodged (usually within minutes) you can renew immediately.
Can I renew my rego without a MyServiceNSW account?
Yes — you can pay rego with just your plate and payment card at any Service NSW centre, over the phone on 13 77 88, or at a Service NSW self-serve kiosk. The MyServiceNSW app is optional.
How do I check a pink slip on someone else's car?
Use the public rego status check at nsw.gov.au/nsw-check-rego. You need the plate and vehicle type; no login required. Useful when checking a car you're buying.
Can I look up a pink slip lodged years ago?
The Service NSW app shows the current inspection status only. Historical pink slip records (previous years' passes) are held on the Transport for NSW system and can be requested by phone on 13 22 13 if you need them for an insurance claim.
Is there a fee to check my pink slip status?
No — both the Service NSW app lookup and the public rego status check are free.
Can police tell if my pink slip is lodged?
Yes — ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) on patrol cars queries the Transport for NSW database in real time. Registration and inspection status come up when your plate is scanned.
Does the pink slip stay on my Service NSW record after rego renewal?
The inspection date remains associated with that rego period. When the next inspection is due, the app updates to show the new due-date status.
