Used Mitsubishi Triton Buyer's Guide NSW 2026 — MN, MQ, MR & new MV
Triton is the tradie ute that never quite gets the credit it deserves. Cheaper than a HiLux, cheaper than a Ranger, and — model for model — a very honest workhorse. Which generation you buy matters enormously though: the 4M41 3.2 diesel in the old MN is bulletproof, the 4N15 2.4 in the MQ/MR needs specific service discipline, and the new MV changes the game again.

The Triton is Australia's third best-selling ute for a reason — capable, cheap to run, and generally more reliable than its price would suggest. But three generations still trade actively on the NSW used market, and their engines and drivetrains are meaningfully different animals. This guide gives you the model-year-by-model-year detail you need before you hand over money.
MN Triton (2009–2015)
The MN is the last of the old-school Tritons — 2.5L 4D56 diesel or 3.2L 4M41 diesel, torsion-bar front, leaf rear. Simple, honest, and now cheap. Key notes:
- 4D56 2.5 diesel: timing belt and balance-shaft belt every 100,000km — non-negotiable. Check receipts.
- 4M41 3.2 diesel (VRW/GLX-R): timing chain, generally trouble-free, but injector wear over 250,000km.
- Auto (INVECS-II): 4-speed on 2.5, 5-speed on 3.2 — regular ATF change every 60,000km extends life dramatically.
- Manual: 3rd-gear synchro on high-km examples.
- Chassis rust: check the rear diff area, spring hangers, and any tray-liner underside if fitted.
- Common accident history — check for prior repair on tray and rear quarter.
MQ Triton (2015–2018)
The MQ introduced the 4N15 2.4 diesel and 5-speed auto. Lighter, more efficient, but with genuine reliability quirks:
- 4N15 2.4 diesel: DPF issues on short-trip usage. Look for a full service history with regen records or a highway-driven owner.
- EGR cooler cracking — coolant loss without visible leak = compression test needed.
- Turbo actuator failure on 150,000km+ examples.
- Injector seat wash-out on very high-km examples.
- 5-speed auto: generally fine, but ATF change every 60,000km recommended.
- Super Select II 4WD (GLS+): test 2H / 4H / 4HLc / 4LLc on a quiet road; no shudder or grinding.
- Rear leaf-spring bush wear if loaded regularly.
MR Triton (2018–2024)
The MR is a facelift of the MQ — same 4N15 diesel but with a 6-speed auto and updated safety (AEB, blind-spot). This is the sweet-spot used ute right now for tradies:
- Same 4N15 diesel notes — DPF, EGR cooler, turbo actuator. Highway-run examples are the ones to buy.
- 6-speed auto (Aisin AWR6B45): smooth, but ATF service every 60–80,000km.
- Super Select II 4WD — as MQ; test all modes.
- Front torsion-bar sag on high-km GLS+ examples.
- Infotainment: check Apple CarPlay / Android Auto, reverse camera, USB ports.
- Tow-bar and hitch wiring — verify factory or reputable aftermarket install.
- GVM upgrade paperwork — verify with certifier if fitted.
MV Triton (2024+)
The MV is an entirely new ute — 2.4L bi-turbo diesel (4N16), 6-speed auto, ladder chassis with dual-rate leaf rears, and the same Super Select II. Too new to trade heavily in NSW used market yet, but early check-points:
- Bi-turbo 4N16: verify recall completion (there are early software updates).
- Software version on the 9-inch infotainment (multiple over-air updates).
- Body-on-frame tolerance — check panel gaps against a known-good showroom car.
- AEB / blind-spot / lane-keep — verify all warning lights function.
- Balance of factory warranty transfers on private sale — Mitsubishi 10-year with service compliance.

The MQ/MR 4N15 diesel — the honest version
Most negative Triton press is about the 4N15 in short-trip city use. In highway-heavy country, tradie, or long-commute service the engine is genuinely reliable to 300,000km+. Diagnostic must-haves on inspection:
- Read DPF regen history (last 20 cycles): >200km between regens = good; <100km = poor.
- Coolant condition and level (no visible loss = EGR cooler probably OK).
- Cold-start smoke — plume of grey/blue = injector or turbo seal wear.
- Fault code memory — even cleared codes leave freeze-frame data we can read.
- Turbo actuator response — scan tool commanded actuation.
Triton vs HiLux vs Ranger (buying reality)
A same-year, same-km Triton is typically $8–15k cheaper than an equivalent HiLux SR5, and $10–18k cheaper than a Ranger XLT. What you give up: brand-perception resale, some interior refinement, and slightly softer ADAS. What you gain: honest pricing, Super Select II (real dial-in centre diff, unlike HiLux's part-time), and the longest factory warranty in class if serviced on schedule.
Frequently asked.
- Is the Mitsubishi Triton reliable?
- The MN 3.2 and the highway-run MQ/MR 4N15 are both reliable to 250,000km+ with proper service. Short-trip city 4N15 examples have DPF and EGR risk — inspect before buying.
- What's the difference between MQ and MR Triton?
- Same 4N15 engine and Super Select II 4WD. The MR gets a 6-speed auto (vs 5), updated safety (AEB, blind-spot), refreshed styling, and a slightly better ride.
- Should I avoid the 4N15 diesel?
- No — avoid short-trip city examples without regen history. A highway-run MR GLS with regen records every 200km+ is a very reliable ute.
- How much is a Triton pre-purchase inspection in Sydney?
- Flat $280 inc GST — anywhere in metropolitan Sydney, Wollongong, Central Coast or Blue Mountains. Includes DPF regen history read and Super Select II function test.
- Can you inspect a Triton at a dealer?
- Yes — most dealers accommodate a pre-purchase inspection. Book after price agreement.
- Is Super Select II really better than a HiLux part-time system?
- Yes for on-road all-weather use — Super Select II has a centre diff so you can run 4H on tar without binding. HiLux part-time is 2H on tar or 4H off-tar only.
- What about the MV bi-turbo — worth waiting for?
- If new-vehicle warranty and up-to-date safety matters, yes. If value-per-dollar matters, an MR GSR at 40–80,000km is the sweet spot.
- Does the Triton hold value?
- Historically weaker resale than HiLux/Ranger — which is why you buy one, not sell one. MR GLS/GSR are holding value better than MQ.
- Do you check GVM upgrades?
- Yes — we verify certifier paperwork, plate installation, and check that suspension components match the GVM plate.
- Do you offer written reports on the day?
- Yes — handed over on the spot, plus emailed PDF within the hour.
- Do you do pink slips too?
- Yes — flat $179 inc GST, mobile, 7 days, 20–30 minutes.
