Pre-Purchase · 11 min read

A pre-purchase inspection is a full independent mechanical, structural and electronic check on a used car you're about to buy. It's not an eSafety Check — that's a much narrower legal-minimum test. A pre-purchase inspection is deliberately broader: everything a competent buyer would want to know before signing the transfer, delivered as a written report you can hand back to the seller for renegotiation or use as evidence to walk away.

We come to the car — at the dealer yard, the private seller's driveway, or a public carpark you've arranged — anywhere in Sydney metro, Wollongong, the Central Coast or the Blue Mountains. We charge a flat $280 inc GST regardless of car type, seller type, or location, and we hand over the written report on the spot.

Why 'independent' is the whole point

A dealer's own workshop reporting on the dealer's own car is not an independent inspection. The dealer's "mechanic mate" you meet on inspection day is not either — they took a phone call from the dealer this morning. A friend's mechanic doing a quick walk-around isn't independent enough — they don't do this for a living and they don't carry the diagnostic gear. An independent inspection is a paid third party with nothing to sell you except an honest opinion.

We don't sell cars. We don't take referral fees from dealers. We don't repair anything we find. That's the entire commercial model — if we shade a report to protect a sale, we've killed the business. Every report we issue could get audited by NSW Fair Trading and we'd stand behind every line.

What the $280 inspection covers

  • Full engine bay inspection — leaks, mounts, belts, hoses, coolant condition, service history clues, evidence of engine-out work.
  • Cold-start and running assessment — noise, smoke (blue, white, black), misfire, cooling behaviour, idle stability.
  • OBD-II scan for stored, pending and freeze-frame fault codes across all modules (not just engine — ABS, airbag, transmission, body control).
  • Transmission behaviour — manual (clutch bite, gear-shift feel) and automatic (shift smoothness, cold vs warm behaviour, kickdown).
  • Brake condition — pad thickness measured, disc runout and thickness, fluid condition, ABS function.
  • Suspension and steering — bushings, ball joints, tie rods, shock leaks, alignment indicators from tyre wear pattern.
  • Underbody inspection — chassis, subframes, exhaust integrity, differential leaks, CV boots torn or leaking.
  • Tyre wear pattern analysis — indirect alignment / suspension health signal, matching brands, remaining life estimate.
  • Body panels, seams, and paint depth spot-checks with a coating thickness gauge for evidence of accident repair.
  • Interior: airbag warning lights, dashboard warning lights, electrical systems, seats, seatbelts, sunroof, air-con output temperature.
  • Battery health and charging system test (voltage under load, alternator output).
  • PPSR (finance / write-off / stolen) check summarised in the report — verifies title is clear.
  • Odometer sanity check against service history if provided.
  • Road test with the buyer where possible (highway and stop-start).

Written report handed over on the spot. Not "emailed within 48 hours" — on the spot, in your hand, before we leave the driveway or dealer yard.

EV and hybrid inspections

Electric and hybrid vehicles get an additional layer: high-voltage battery state-of-health assessment via manufacturer diagnostic protocol, DC fast-charge history where accessible, thermal management system check, and HV fault code scan. Battery health is the single biggest determinant of value on a used EV — a Tesla, BYD, MG ZS EV, Polestar or Kona EV without a health check is a gamble. The $280 flat fee includes the EV assessment.

Where we inspect

  • Dealer yards — Sydney metro, Parramatta, Liverpool, Penrith, Blacktown, the whole basin.
  • Private sellers — driveways or public carparks.
  • Fleet auctions and outlet centres (with prior seller notification and yard access approval).
  • Wollongong and the Illawarra.
  • Central Coast up to Gosford and Terrigal.
  • Blue Mountains up to Katoomba.

Flat $280 inc GST — same price at a Blue Mountains driveway as at a Zetland strata carpark. No distance surcharge, no weekend loading, no public holiday premium.

How the appointment runs

  1. Book online — provide the seller's contact details and the vehicle location.
  2. We contact the seller within 2 business hours to arrange access.
  3. We attend at the earliest available time both parties can agree — usually within 2–3 business days for private sellers, same-day possible for cooperative dealers.
  4. 60–90 minute inspection depending on complexity.
  5. Written report handed to the buyer on the spot.
  6. Follow-up call with the buyer walking through the findings, if requested.
  7. Renegotiation ammunition or walk-away evidence — the report is deliberately structured for both uses.

We don't need you present. Most Sydney buyers we work with are interstate or too busy to attend — we handle the coordination end-to-end and phone you with the outcome as soon as we leave the car.

When it's worth doing

  • Any used car over about $8,000 — the maths always works.
  • Any used EV or hybrid — battery health assessment alone justifies the fee.
  • Any car being bought interstate that you can't test-drive.
  • Any car with an unusually low price for its year/km — there's usually a reason.
  • Any car sold "as is where is" from an auction or outlet.
  • Any car where the seller resists you bringing an independent mechanic.
  • Any dealer sale over $15,000 — even from a reputable dealer, a second opinion has saved buyers thousands.
  • Any car more than 8 years old — accumulated wear items add up.

When it's not necessary

A brand-new car with delivery kms and full manufacturer warranty doesn't need a pre-purchase inspection. Neither does a used car under about $5,000 where the inspection cost is a meaningful percentage of the purchase price and you're prepared to walk away from any repair bill. A demo car under 3 years old from an authorised dealer with a factory-backed used-car warranty is usually low risk. We'd rather tell you not to book than take money for an inspection you don't need — ask us before booking if you're unsure.

Report format

Structured section-by-section written report. Colour-coded (green / amber / red). Photos of anything material. Estimated repair cost bracket for every amber and red item so you can make a rational bargaining decision. If the car is a walk-away, we say so plainly and explain why. If it's a bargain waiting to be signed, we say that too — a "pass with confidence" report is worth as much to the buyer as a "walk away" report.

  • Green: item passes inspection, no action needed.
  • Amber: item shows wear but is currently serviceable; note for future budget.
  • Red: item is faulty, damaged or requires imminent attention; use for renegotiation or walk-away.
  • Estimated dollar cost bracket for each amber/red item.
  • Photos embedded for every material finding.
  • Overall recommendation — buy / buy with renegotiation / walk away.

How to use the report to negotiate

  1. Hand the report (or key findings) to the seller in person or by email.
  2. Total the amber and red items' repair cost brackets.
  3. Present that total as your renegotiation ask — either a price reduction or the seller having the items fixed before purchase.
  4. Dealers commonly agree to fix red items themselves before delivery.
  5. Private sellers commonly reduce the price by the total repair estimate.
  6. Walk away if the seller refuses both — the report has already justified the walk.

Common findings from Sydney used-car inspections

  • Undisclosed previous accident repair — spotted by paint depth mismatch and panel gaps.
  • Odometer discrepancy vs service history dates.
  • Battery health on used EVs 15–25% below manufacturer's original rating.
  • Timing belt overdue on European cars nearing 100,000 km.
  • Transmission service overdue on Japanese autos over 120,000 km.
  • Aftermarket suspension without engineering — a defect notice waiting to happen.
  • Salt-corroded brake components on beach-parked coastal cars.
  • PPSR finance interest still registered — title not clear.
Common questions

Frequently asked.

How much is a pre-purchase car inspection in Sydney?
Flat $280 inc GST for cars, SUVs, utes and vans up to 4.5 tonnes. Same price anywhere in our coverage area — Sydney metro, Wollongong, Central Coast, Blue Mountains.
How long does the inspection take?
60–90 minutes for most cars. Complex or unusually high-value cars can run longer at no extra cost.
Do you inspect at dealer yards?
Yes — Sydney, Wollongong, Central Coast and Blue Mountains dealer yards. We contact the dealer directly to book access.
Do I get the report on the spot?
Yes — full written report handed over before we leave. Not emailed later.
Do you inspect EVs and hybrids?
Yes — including battery state-of-health assessment, charging system check and HV system fault codes.
What if the seller refuses inspection?
Walk away. A seller who blocks an independent inspection is telling you what they know. That's information worth $280 on its own.
Can I book without being present?
Yes — most of our interstate and time-poor buyers do exactly that. We coordinate with the seller, inspect, and phone you with the outcome. Report emailed as PDF if you can't collect in person.
Do you do PPSR checks as part of the inspection?
Yes — the PPSR (finance, write-off, stolen check) is summarised in the report. Certified PPSR certificate available for a small extra government fee if you want the formal document.
What's the difference between a pre-purchase inspection and a pink slip?
A pink slip is a narrow safety pass/fail against Transport for NSW criteria. A pre-purchase inspection is a much broader mechanical, structural, electronic and history check — designed to help you decide whether to buy the car, not just whether to register it.
Do you cover interstate transfers?
Interstate buyers frequently commission us to inspect a Sydney car they can't attend. We handle seller coordination end-to-end and phone you with findings. The car then needs a blue slip on arrival in the destination state per that state's rules.
Can I use the report to negotiate a lower price?
Yes — that's a primary purpose. Present the total of amber/red item cost estimates as your renegotiation ask. Dealers usually agree to repair; private sellers usually reduce price.
Do you accept card payment?
Yes — card, tap, PayID and cash all accepted at the vehicle. Payment due on completion of the inspection.
