Used Toyota HiLux Buyer's Guide NSW 2026 — N70, N80 & N80 Facelift
HiLux is the ute that holds value like a rock, which is exactly why used ones aren't cheap and why inspections matter — sellers know they can ask top dollar. Three generations still trade actively in NSW, with three completely different diesel engines. Buy the right one for your use case and it will run to 400,000km. Buy the wrong one and you'll DPF-clog it inside two years.

HiLux is the best-selling vehicle in Australia year after year, so the used-market pool is enormous. That's good for supply and bad for scrutiny — sellers know demand is deep and won't drop price without a reason. A $280 independent inspection is exactly that reason. Below is what we check, by generation.
N70 HiLux (2005–2015)
The old-shape workhorse. Cheap, honest, and largely bulletproof. Two diesels: 1KD-FTV 3.0 4-cyl and 1GR-FE 4.0 V6 petrol (SR5 auto). Priorities:
- 1KD-FTV 3.0 diesel: cracked pistons on early builds (pre-2010) when tuned or heavily loaded. Compression test essential.
- Injector wash / EGR carbon on high-km examples — rough idle and black smoke on start.
- Balancer-shaft bolt loosening — Toyota TSB, worth verifying.
- 5-speed auto (A750F): generally strong; ATF change every 60,000km.
- Manual: 5th-gear synchro at high km.
- Chassis rust on rear leaf-spring hangers, spare-wheel carrier, and around the fuel-filler neck (older SA-imported examples).
- Tray rust behind cab and around tie-down anchors.
- Front-end wear: upper ball joints, lower control arm bushings, drag-link ends.
N80 HiLux (2015–2020)
Total redesign, new 1GD-FTV 2.8 diesel. Improved refinement, worse DPF reliability if used wrong. Priorities:
- 1GD-FTV 2.8 diesel: DPF blockage on short-trip city use — the Toyota-Australia class action was over exactly this. Check for recall fix (extended service interval, updated DPF regen software) and read regen history.
- Injector wear at 200,000km+ — knock or misfire on cold start.
- 6-speed auto (AC60F): smooth, strong, ATF service every 60,000km.
- Fuel-tank filler-neck rust on early N80s (recall).
- Frame corrosion on coastal or rural cars — check chassis paint at spring hangers.
- Front leaf-spring seats and upper ball joints on tradie-loaded examples.
- Infotainment: check reverse camera, Bluetooth, USB, Apple CarPlay (added in facelift, retrofit available).
N80 Facelift (2020–2023)
Refreshed grille, upgraded 1GD to 150kW/500Nm, revised DPF software, new interior. Best used HiLux for genuine reliability:
- 1GD-FTV with revised DPF software — genuinely improved regen behaviour. Still verify with regen history.
- New 6-speed auto calibration — smoother, but still ATF change every 60,000km.
- Apple CarPlay / Android Auto standard — verify function.
- Rogue and Rugged X trims: check widened flares for stone damage, wheel arch integrity.
- Blind-spot / RCTA (from SR5 up): verify warning lights function.
- Multi-terrain-select and downhill-assist on Rogue/Rugged X.
N80 GR Sport and 8th-gen tail-end (2023–2024)
- 224kW/550Nm 1GD-FTV (GR Sport): 48V mild-hybrid module status.
- Widened track, KYB monotube dampers — verify no leak, no knock.
- Front and rear locking diffs (GR Sport wide-track): function test on gravel.
- Software revision on multimedia (multiple updates).

The DPF story — the honest version
The 1GD DPF issue was real. Toyota Australia settled a class action. The fix (extended service interval, longer active regen, updated ECU calibration) is now standard on facelift cars and applied retroactively to pre-facelift under warranty. What you need to verify on an N80 buy:
- DPF regen history on scan: >200km between regens = healthy. <100km = failing DPF.
- Service book with the recall / TSB confirmed applied.
- Cold-start smoke: none = healthy; blue plume = injector or turbo seal.
- Engine bay for evidence of DPF replacement (very high cost — sellers rarely disclose).
HiLux vs Ranger vs Triton (buying reality)
A same-year, same-km HiLux SR5 typically holds $6–12k more than an equivalent Ranger XLT and $10–18k more than a Triton GLS. What you pay for: proven long-term drivetrain, best resale in class, dealer network depth. What you give up: interior refinement (Ranger wins), tow rating headroom (Ranger V6), some tech (Ranger's 12-inch screen).
Frequently asked.
- Is a used HiLux worth the price premium?
- Yes if you value resale — HiLux depreciates slower than any ute in Australia. No if pure spec-for-dollar is the metric — Ranger and Triton give more equipment for the money.
- Which HiLux engine is most reliable?
- 1GR-FE 4.0 V6 petrol (SR5 N70) is the most bulletproof. 1KD-FTV 3.0 diesel is proven at 300,000km+ if serviced. 1GD-FTV 2.8 pre-facelift needs verified regen history; facelift 1GD is trouble-free.
- Should I avoid the pre-facelift 1GD DPF issue?
- Not necessarily — a pre-facelift N80 with the recall applied and confirmed regen history is fine. A pre-facelift N80 with unknown service history and short-trip use is a walk-away.
- How much is a HiLux pre-purchase inspection in Sydney?
- Flat $280 inc GST — anywhere in metropolitan Sydney, Wollongong, Central Coast or Blue Mountains. Includes DPF regen history read and 4WD engagement test.
- Can you inspect a HiLux at a dealer?
- Yes — most dealers accommodate a pre-purchase inspection. Book after price agreement so the dealer knows you're serious.
- Do you check GVM upgrades and canopies?
- Yes — we verify certifier paperwork and check load spec vs GVM plate.
- What about high-km N70 examples?
- A 250,000km N70 with clean service history is often a better buy than a 100,000km N80 without one — the 1KD is genuinely long-lived. Compression test confirms.
- Is the GR Sport worth the money?
- For genuine off-road use, yes — widened track, KYB dampers, front/rear lockers are meaningful. For urban tradie use, an SR5 or Rogue gives 95% of the ute for 15–20% less.
- How long does the inspection take?
- About 60–90 minutes on-site — longer than a pink slip because of the DPF scan and 4WD function test.
- Do you offer written reports on the day?
- Yes — handed over on the spot, plus emailed PDF within the hour.
- Do you do pink slips too?
- Yes — flat $179 inc GST, mobile, 7 days, 20–30 minutes.
