Electric Vehicle Pre-Purchase Inspection Sydney 2026 — Tesla, BYD, Polestar, Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, MG

The Sydney used EV market has exploded through 2024–2026. Tesla Model 3 and Y dominate; BYD, Polestar, Kia, Hyundai, MG and BMW/Mercedes/Audi EVs fill out the rest. Battery pack health is 40–60% of a used EV's value, and it's not visible in a Carsales listing. Here's what a $280 independent EV inspection actually checks, brand by brand, and the walk-away signals to know.

Used EVs come with a fundamentally different risk profile to ICE cars. Timing chains, DPFs, valve cover gaskets and transmission valve bodies don't exist. Instead you have one dominant risk: the high-voltage battery pack. Its state of health (SoH) — the current usable capacity as a percentage of new — determines both current range and future replacement cost. This guide covers battery SoH methodology by brand plus the other EV-specific checks (motor, reduction gearbox, 12V auxiliary, HV cabling, DC fast-charge history, thermal management).

The six EV categories that matter most

  1. Battery pack state of health (SoH) — expressed as % of original capacity.
  2. DC fast-charge history — high DCFC ratio correlates with faster degradation on some chemistries.
  3. Motor / reduction gear noise — bearing wear a known Model 3/Y category.
  4. HV cabling and inverter — no service items but check for stored fault codes.
  5. 12V auxiliary battery — small, essential for start-up, fails at 3–5 years.
  6. Thermal management (coolant loop for battery + drive unit) — coolant condition and pump operation.

Battery SoH — the single most important number

Every EV manufacturer measures SoH internally. Access to the number varies:

  • Tesla: read via Service Mode or aftermarket tools (Scan My Tesla, TeslaFi). Also inferable via rated range on a 100% charge vs when new.
  • Hyundai / Kia (Ioniq, Kona, EV6, Niro EV, Ioniq 5): OBD-II with Torque Pro + custom PIDs, or GDS dealer tool.
  • Polestar 2 / Volvo EX40/EC40: Polestar service tool or dealer.
  • BYD (Atto 3, Seal, Dolphin, Sealion): BYD service tool; some models expose data via OBD-II.
  • MG (ZS EV, MG 4): MG service tool.
  • BMW (i3, i4, iX3, iX, i7): ISTA scan.
  • Mercedes EQ series: Star diagnostic.
  • Audi e-tron series: VCDS / VAG diagnostic.

Rule of thumb across brands: 3–5% degradation in year 1 is normal (initial break-in), then 1–2% per year thereafter. A 5-year-old EV at 90%+ SoH is healthy. Below 85% at 5 years suggests DC fast-charge heavy use or thermal management issue. Below 80% at 5 years is a red flag.

DC fast-charge history — the hidden battery-life metric

Every EV logs DC fast-charge (DCFC) sessions. Very high DCFC ratio (e.g. car charged mostly on Superchargers / Chargefox rather than home AC) correlates with faster degradation on some battery chemistries — especially older NCA (Tesla) and some early NMC. Newer LFP chemistry (Tesla Model 3 SR, BYD Atto 3, some MG variants) is more DCFC-tolerant.

Motor and reduction gearbox noise

EV drivetrains are simple (motor + single-speed reduction gear + inverter) but reduction gear bearings do wear and drive-unit motors do occasionally fail. Road test:

  • Highway cruise at 80–100 km/h: no whine, no vibration.
  • Regen deceleration: no thump or grind.
  • Full acceleration from a stop: no whine spike.
  • Diagnostic scan: no drive unit fault codes.

12V auxiliary battery — the unsung failure point

Every EV has a small 12V auxiliary battery that boots the HV system, runs cabin electronics, and powers safety systems in a crash. Failure = car won't start (even with HV pack full) and is a top-3 reason for EV service callouts. A 4+ year old EV with the original 12V battery is on borrowed time. Replacement $200–$400 fitted. Check service history for replacement.

Thermal management — the silent battery-life protector

Every modern EV cools (and heats) its HV pack via a liquid coolant loop with a dedicated pump. Neglect this and pack temperatures cycle wider, degradation accelerates. Check:

  • Coolant reservoir level and colour.
  • Pump audible on ignition-on.
  • Stored fault codes for battery temperature.
  • Air-cooled (MG ZS EV early, Leaf) — less tolerant of DCFC and heat.

Model-by-model quick reference

Tesla Model 3 (2017+) and Model Y (2022+ AU)

  • SoH via Service Mode or Scan My Tesla — the definitive number.
  • MCU (media control unit) — older Model 3 MCU-2 fine; watch touchscreen response.
  • Reduction gear noise on early builds.
  • Phantom drain and Sentry Mode battery draw — check overnight loss.
  • Recall software: verify latest firmware.

Tesla Model S (2012+) and Model X (2015+)

  • Battery pack age: older 60/75/85 packs have variable SoH — get the number.
  • MCU-1 to MCU-2 upgrade: check if done (touchscreen retentivity).
  • Air suspension on S/X: strut leaks reported on 8+ year old examples.
  • Model X falcon doors: known service items.

BYD Atto 3 / Seal / Dolphin / Sealion

  • Blade battery (LFP): highly DCFC-tolerant, long-life expected.
  • BYD 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty transfers.
  • Watch software update history — many OTA fixes since launch.
  • Interior wear varies model-to-model.

Polestar 2 (2020+)

  • 78 kWh NMC pack — check SoH via Polestar service tool.
  • Multiple software recalls since launch — verify all applied.
  • Front infotainment (Google-based) reliable; rare hardware faults.
  • Adaptive dampers on Performance Pack.

Kia EV6 / Hyundai Ioniq 5 / Genesis GV60 (E-GMP platform)

  • 77.4 kWh NMC pack (LR), 58 kWh (SR). SoH via GDS or aftermarket.
  • ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) failure — known service item, warranty covered but check history.
  • 800V architecture enables ultra-fast DCFC — very DCFC-tolerant.

MG ZS EV / MG 4

  • MG ZS EV pre-facelift (air-cooled): more limited DCFC tolerance.
  • MG ZS EV facelift and MG 4: liquid-cooled, much stronger.

Range / capacity red flags

Sellers should be able to demonstrate:

  • Actual displayed range at 100% charge close to WLTP figure minus expected age degradation.
  • Consistent kWh consumption per 100 km on the trip computer.
  • Recent DC fast-charge session showing normal peak charge rate.
  • No stored HV or thermal fault codes.

Warranty position for used EVs in Australia

  • Tesla: 4 years / 80,000 km new-car; 8 years / 160,000 km HV battery + drive unit (with 70% capacity retention floor).
  • Hyundai: 5 years / unlimited km + 8 years / 160,000 km HV battery.
  • Kia: 7 years / unlimited km + 7 years / 150,000 km HV battery.
  • Polestar: 5 years / unlimited km + 8 years / 160,000 km HV battery.
  • BYD: 6 years / 150,000 km + 8 years / 160,000 km battery.

The pink slip angle for used EVs

The NSW pink slip (eSafety Check) has no EV-specific items — the safety checklist is the same as any passenger car (brakes, tyres, lights, wipers, structure, emissions where relevant). Post-2020 vehicles get an OBD-II scan for stored codes; EVs can have HV-specific codes stored that show on that scan. We do mobile pink slips on any EV, flat $179 inc GST.

The five walk-away signals on a used EV

  1. Battery SoH below 85% at 5 years / 100,000 km (chemistry-dependent).
  2. Very high DCFC ratio on an NCA or older NMC chemistry.
  3. Motor whine or drive unit fault codes.
  4. Overnight phantom drain above 5% on any modern EV.
  5. Multiple stored HV / thermal / charging fault codes.

What's DCFC ratio and why does it matter?
The percentage of total energy delivered via DC fast-chargers vs AC home charging. High DCFC ratio (>50%) on NCA or NMC chemistry accelerates degradation. LFP chemistry tolerates DCFC without significant impact.
Does the pink slip check the EV battery?
No — the NSW eSafety Check has no HV battery requirement. Battery SoH is a separate voluntary check done at pre-purchase.
Should I get an inspection on a certified pre-owned Tesla?
Yes — Tesla-certified inspections are sales-driven. Independent SoH assessment and drive-unit check protects you.
Are used EVs reliable?
Generally yes — significantly fewer moving parts than ICE cars. Main risks are battery pack aging and drive-unit bearing failures (rare). 12V aux battery replacement is the most common service item.
What about phantom drain on EVs?
Some overnight drain is normal (2–3% per week on Tesla with Sentry Mode off). Above 5% overnight indicates a fault or excessive Sentry / cabin overheat protection use. Check via diagnostic.
Can you inspect a Tesla at a Tesla Centre?
With Tesla's consent; mostly not permitted on their premises. Better to inspect at the seller's address before Tesla intake.
