Used Tesla Inspection Sydney 2026 — Model 3, Model Y, Model S: What Independent Buyers Actually Need to Check
A used Tesla is not a used Camry. The mechanical failure surface is smaller, but the electronic and battery failure surface is larger — and the fixes are more expensive per event. Here's the honest 2026 inspection playbook for a used Model 3, Model Y, Model S or Model X in Sydney, plus what a $280 independent pre-purchase inspection can and can't tell you.

Used Tesla pricing in Sydney softened dramatically through 2024–2026 as new Model 3 and Model Y stock landed at aggressive price points. That's created a mature secondary market — a 2020 Model 3 Long Range that sold new for $79,000 now sits at $32,000–$40,000 depending on condition. Bargains exist. Traps exist too — and unlike ICE cars, the Tesla trap categories are different: battery, screen (MCU), high-voltage drive units, phantom drain, and body/panel repair evidence.
The five things that matter on any used Tesla
- Battery state of health (SoH) — the single largest determinant of remaining value.
- Media Control Unit (MCU) condition — early Model S / Model X units have known failure patterns.
- Drive unit noise — front and rear motors and gearboxes have specific noise signatures.
- Panel gaps and paint quality — Tesla build tolerance varies; also indicates prior repair.
- Phantom drain rate — high drain over a static week points to firmware, 12V battery, or aftermarket accessory issues.
Battery state of health — how we measure it independently
A Tesla's usable battery capacity degrades roughly 1–2% per year in normal use, faster if the car has been supercharged aggressively. There's no dashboard SoH readout in most Teslas — Tesla holds that data internally — but the number can be estimated within ~2% accuracy through a combination of methods:
- Range-based estimation: charge to 100%, note the projected range in the dashboard, compare to the model's original EPA/WLTP figure minus expected degradation for age.
- Third-party OBD-II tools (via aftermarket adaptors like ScanMyTesla): reads BMS-reported energy capacity directly.
- Charging test: run a controlled charge from a known low SOC to 100% and measure kWh added at the charger, subtract charging losses.
- Tesla Service report if the seller has requested one — most reliable single number.
Rule of thumb: a 5-year-old Model 3 Long Range with 90–92% SoH is normal; 88% is slightly aged; below 85% is a negotiation point (worth $2,000–$4,000 off asking depending on trim).
MCU and screen — the known Model S/X failure category
Model S and Model X vehicles built 2012–early 2018 used the "MCU1" media unit which had a documented eMMC flash memory failure mode. Failed MCUs cause total infotainment failure and require replacement (Tesla will replace with MCU2 for about $2,900). On a used Model S/X from that era, ask:
- Has the MCU been replaced or upgraded? Ask for the invoice.
- Does the touchscreen respond consistently and boot cleanly on ignition-on?
- Are there any grey areas, dead pixels, or delaminated glass edges (Model 3/Y post-2020)?
Model 3 and Model Y screens rarely fail but can develop yellow-tint bands on early units (Tesla covers this under warranty when in-warranty; a UV treatment is a $250–$500 fix out of warranty).
Drive unit noise — what to listen for
- Rear drive unit whine on light throttle at 40–60 km/h (Model S/X, older Model 3): can indicate gearbox wear. Common on high-km older cars; Tesla warranty covered many; check for a replacement history.
- Front drive unit noise (Long Range and Performance variants): rare, usually bearing-related.
- Regen braking judder or grinding: pad and rotor condition — but note that regen means Tesla pads last 3–4× conventional car pads. Rusted rotors from disuse are common on low-mileage examples.
- Clunk during D-R shift: normal on some early Model 3s; concerning if pronounced or new.
Panel gaps, paint and prior repair
Tesla panel gap tolerance is famously variable. What matters is whether the current gaps look factory-inconsistent (leave alone) or repair-inconsistent (walk-away or negotiate).
- Boot-to-quarter and bonnet-to-guard gaps: symmetric side-to-side? Different side to side = past repair.
- Paint depth reading with a gauge — factory paint is typically 100–140 microns; repair paint reads 200+.
- Front bumper attachment points — clip damage is common (kerb hits, low speed knocks).
- Rear frunk seal on Model 3/Y — check for water ingress rings inside the frunk tub.
- Roof glass (glass roof cars) — cracks or delamination.
Phantom drain and 12V battery
Every Tesla loses a small amount of charge sitting parked — typical is 1–3% per week. Higher drain (5–10% per week) is a diagnostic marker:
- Aftermarket accessories left permanently powered (dash cams, telematics, GPS trackers).
- Weak 12V auxiliary battery (a 3–5 year lifespan item — $300–$500 to replace).
- Sentry Mode left on continuously (draws 250 W/hr).
- Firmware regression on rare occasions.
Ask the seller for the app's charge history if they can show it, or agree to check the car charge state again 48–72 hours after inspection.
Model-by-model quick reference
Model 3 (2019+ Australia)
- SR+ / RWD: LFP battery from 2021 (Made in China) — safer to 100% charging; slightly worse cold performance.
- Long Range / Performance: NCA battery — keep daily charge at 80–90%.
- Facelift ("Highland") from 2024: revised interior; no stalks; check yoke/wheel preference on the specific build.
- Watch for: rear drive unit noise, boot seal water ingress, glass roof condition.
Model Y (2022+ Australia)
- Same battery / drive unit variants as Model 3.
- Watch for: rear seat frame welds on early-build 2022 examples; suspension top mount noise; frunk drain blockage.

Model S (all years)
- Pre-2018: MCU1 replacement history essential.
- Air suspension: leaks are common on higher-km examples ($2,000+ per corner).
- Drive unit replacements: not uncommon out of warranty; check history.
- 2021+ refresh: yoke steering wheel option; check preference.
Model X (all years)
- Falcon Wing door mechanism: sensor and motor faults common; realignment periodic.
- Second row seat mechanism (6/7-seat variants) issues.

Teslas registered from January 2020 fall under the NSW OBD-II emissions requirement, which is not applicable to BEVs (no combustion emissions). - What if the Tesla has FSD (Full Self Driving) purchased?
