Used Car Inspection Sydney 2026 — Independent Pre-Purchase Check (Flat $280 inc GST)
A used car inspection in Sydney is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy. This is what our mobile inspector actually does in the driveway or dealer yard, what the written report contains, how to use it at the negotiating table, and how to spend the $280 well.

Sydney's used car market moves fast, and the good listings sell in days — not weeks. That timeline is exactly why a proper independent used car inspection matters: you can't afford a full pre-sale mechanic appointment on every car you're keen on, but you absolutely need one on the car you're about to sign for. This guide walks through what a real used car inspection in Sydney includes, what it doesn't, and how our mobile inspector uses the $280 in your interest.
Why "independent" is the word that matters
The critical word in "independent used car inspection" is independent. A dealer's own mechanic passing the car is not an inspection — it's a signature. An RACV/NRMA member-only check is fine but capped and often booked out. An independent mobile mechanic paid by you (not the seller) is the only person in the transaction whose job is to tell you what's actually wrong. That's the model we run: we don't sell you the car, we don't fix the car, we don't get referrals from the seller. The report is neutral.
What we check on a Sydney used car
The inspection runs 60–90 minutes depending on vehicle size and history complexity. We work through:
- Full computer diagnostic scan (all modules) — stored fault codes, recent readiness monitors, live sensor data.
- Engine bay walk-around — oil condition, coolant, leaks, belts, hoses, radiator condition.
- Cold-start and running assessment — smoke colour, misfire, idle stability.
- Under-body inspection — chassis rails, sub-frames, exhaust, transmission and diff seals.
- Rust check — sills, wheel arches, floor pans, boot floor, spare wheel well.
- Brakes — pad thickness front and rear, disc scoring, calliper condition, park brake.
- Suspension — ball joints, tie rod ends, bushes, shock leaks, wheel bearing play.
- Tyres — brand, tread depth, wear pattern (uneven wear is your alignment/suspension smoking gun), matching sizes.
- Body panels — paint depth readings on every panel to detect previous accident repairs.
- Interior — every electric function, seat rails, air-con temperature at vent, infotainment operation.
- Battery health and charging system — cranking amps, alternator output.
- Road test — cold start behaviour, gear changes under load, braking straight-line pull, ABS test, cruise control.
- History cross-check — VIN against PPSR (finance/write-off/theft) and service history where available.
- Modification and compliance check — engineering certificates for any non-standard components.
EV-specific checks
Electric and hybrid vehicles get additional layers: high-voltage battery state-of-health (SoH) via manufacturer diagnostic, DC fast-charge history if accessible, thermal management system function, HV fault code scan, and range-degradation estimate vs original specification. Battery health is the single biggest determinant of used EV value — a Tesla, BYD, Polestar, MG ZS EV, Kona EV or Ioniq without this check is a gamble.
Where we can do it
Anywhere in Greater Sydney, plus Wollongong, the Central Coast and the Blue Mountains. Dealer yards, private homes, apartment garages, workplaces. If the vehicle is at a dealership, we ring ahead so they have the keys and a set of jacks or a hoist ready — no surprises for them, no wasted time for you.
The written report — handed over on the spot
You get a written report before we leave the driveway. No 24-hour wait, no follow-up email you have to chase, no PDF-in-portal login. The report is broken into three tiers so it's genuinely usable at the negotiating table:
- Safety fails — items that would fail a pink slip. Non-negotiable to fix before purchase.
- Repair items — not dangerous, but you'll spend money on them within 12 months. Priced with typical Sydney workshop ranges.
- Cosmetic / observation — worth knowing, doesn't affect drivability. Includes paint depth readings.
The tiers matter because sellers respond to specifics. "Needs some work" is negotiation kryptonite. "Front pads at 3mm, rear rotors scored, budget $650" is a price adjustment.
What the $280 does and doesn't cover
Included: everything above, plus computer scan, PPSR check, and the written report. Flat rate anywhere in the coverage area — no call-out surcharges, no fuel loading, no "premium vehicle" tier, no weekend surcharge.
Not included: dismantling components (removing wheels for full brake caliper strip, dropping the sump). If the visual and diagnostic checks flag something that needs the wheel off, we tell you and quote separately — you don't get billed by surprise.
Timing: book after the test drive, before the deposit
- Find the listing, ring the seller, arrange a viewing.
- Test drive the car yourself — trust your first impressions.
- If you're interested, book the pre-purchase inspection online (60 seconds).
- We contact the seller within 2 business hours to schedule.
- We inspect, hand you the report, walk you through it.
- You use the report to negotiate — or walk away.
- Only after the report is clear or the price is renegotiated do you pay deposit or full amount.
Common Sydney-specific things we find
- Coastal rust on suburban-driven cars — anywhere within 5km of the beach (Manly, Cronulla, Coogee, Dee Why, Bondi).
- Suspension damage from Sydney's pothole seasons (winter western suburbs is brutal).
- Ex-Uber/rideshare cars with hidden 200,000+ km histories.
- Flood-damaged imports from Queensland's 2022 floods still in circulation.
- Wound-back speedos — the digital age didn't kill this, it just made it more subtle.
- Undisclosed dealer-service reset that hides a fault code cleared before the sale.
- Salt corrosion on brake calipers from beach-parked cars.
- Modified suspension without engineering (common on utes and 4WDs).
- Poorly repaired accident damage on the mass-market family SUVs (RAV4, CX-5, X-Trail).
Dealer inspections vs private-seller inspections
Both are $280 flat — same scope, same report format. Practical differences:
- Dealer yards: we deal with the yard manager for access. Book anytime; usually inspected within 24 hours. Dealers are used to independent inspectors and rarely resist.
- Private sellers: we coordinate directly with the seller. 2–3 days lead time typical. Some sellers resist — that's a signal in itself.
- Dealer yards often have a hoist available — deeper look on some items possible.
- Private-sale cars are usually in "sold as is" condition, so the report matters more.
Using the report to negotiate
- Total the amber and red items' cost estimates.
- Present that total as your renegotiation ask — either a price reduction or the seller fixing items before sale.
- Dealer response: usually offers to fix red items themselves (they're set up for it) — but confirm what "fix" means in writing before you commit.
- Private seller response: usually a price reduction — private sellers rarely want to arrange repairs.
- If the seller refuses both, walk away. The report has already justified the walk.
What we won't do (deliberately)
- Repair anything we find — conflict of interest.
- Refer you to specific repair workshops for commission — we're independent.
- Sell you a warranty product on the back of the inspection.
- Shade a report to protect a sale — every report is what we found.
- Rush an inspection because the seller is impatient — 60–90 minutes minimum.
Frequently asked.
- How much is a used car inspection in Sydney?
- Our flat rate is $280 inc GST for any light vehicle, anywhere in Sydney metro, Wollongong, Central Coast and Blue Mountains. No call-out fees, no vehicle-type surcharges.
- Can you inspect a car at a dealer yard?
- Yes. We ring the dealer ahead of the appointment so they have the keys and jacks ready. Dealers deal with independent inspectors constantly — it's a normal part of the transaction.
- How long does the inspection take?
- 60–90 minutes depending on the vehicle. You get the written report before we leave.
- Do you do a PPSR check?
- Yes — included. We verify the VIN against the national register for finance owing, write-off history and stolen status.
- What if the car fails?
- "Fails" isn't quite the word — we don't pass or fail a private-purchase inspection. We tell you what's wrong and roughly what it will cost, in three tiers of severity. You decide.
- Do you dismantle anything?
- Not as part of the standard inspection — visual, diagnostic and road-test only. If a red flag needs deeper work (e.g. dropping a wheel), we tell you and quote separately, never billed by surprise.
- Do you inspect EVs and hybrids?
- Yes — including battery state-of-health, charging system check and HV system fault codes. Same $280 flat rate.
- Can I book without being present?
- Yes — most interstate and time-poor Sydney buyers do exactly that. We coordinate with the seller, inspect, and phone you with the outcome.
- Do you cover pink slip clearance too?
- Not on a pre-purchase inspection — pink slip is a separate service ($179 flat). If the pre-purchase inspection reveals items that would fail a pink slip, the report identifies them and any workshop can rectify.
- Do you inspect on weekends?
- Yes — 7 days a week, 7am–7pm. Same $280 flat rate, no weekend loading.
- Do you inspect motorbikes, trucks, or heavy vehicles?
- Not currently — light vehicles up to 4.5 tonnes GVM only. Motorbikes and heavy vehicles have separate specialist inspection regimes.
- What if the seller refuses to allow inspection?
- Walk away. A seller refusing independent inspection is telling you what they know. That refusal itself is worth $280 of information.
