Vehicle Inspection Report NSW 2026 — Pink Slip, Blue Slip & Pre-Purchase Compared

Three completely different documents get lumped together as "vehicle inspection reports" in NSW: the eSafety Check (pink slip), the Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection (blue slip), and the private pre-purchase inspection. They serve different purposes, are issued by different types of stations, cost different amounts, are valid for different lengths of time, and only one of them ever gets used at Service NSW for a rego renewal.

This guide runs through all three so you can work out — in about 60 seconds — which one your situation actually needs, then book the right thing without wasting a call-out.

1. Pink slip — the eSafety Check report

The pink slip is a Transport for NSW safety inspection required annually for light vehicles 5 years and older that are already on NSW rego. The report is lodged electronically to Service NSW inside a few minutes of the inspection ending — you don't hand-carry any paperwork. The valid pass sits on your Service NSW record for 6 months.

Scope: brakes, tyres, steering, structure, lights, wipers, seatbelts, windscreen, exhaust and emissions items — the safety scope defined by Transport for NSW. It is not a mechanical service and it is narrower than a pre-purchase inspection.

2. Blue slip — the AUVIS report

The blue slip is a much more involved inspection required when a vehicle isn't on current NSW rego — rego expired more than 3 months, interstate transfer, rebuilt write-off, or first-time NSW registration of an imported vehicle. It must be done at a designated AUVIS station (not mobile) and covers identity, structure and full compliance in addition to the standard safety items.

Scope: everything on a pink slip PLUS VIN and engine number verification, chassis rail measurement, structural rust and repair check, modification compliance (mod plates, engineer certificates), and — for imports and write-offs — full documentation cross-check. We don't do blue slips (regulation restricts them to fixed AUVIS premises) — we'll point you to the nearest one if that's what you need.

3. Pre-purchase inspection report

The pre-purchase inspection is a private buyer-commissioned inspection with no legal or Service NSW role. It's about the mechanical, structural and electronic condition of a car you're about to buy, and the report is written for the buyer's decision-making — not for a government database. There's no format prescribed by anyone, which means quality varies hugely between providers.

Which report do I actually need?

• Renewing NSW rego on a car you already own (5+ years old) → pink slip.
• Buying a used car and want to know what you're getting → pre-purchase inspection.
• Rego expired more than 3 months / interstate transfer / first-time NSW rego → blue slip.
• Selling a car and want to add trust to the sale → pink slip (if due) or pre-purchase inspection at buyer request.
• Clearing a defect notice → pink slip (yellow sticker) or blue slip (major structural, red/blue sticker).
• Rebuilt write-off returning to the road → blue slip.
• Imported vehicle first registration → blue slip.

What a good report looks like — regardless of type

A competent inspection report shows: what was tested, what was found, photos of anything material, and an unambiguous conclusion — pass/fail on the pink slip and blue slip, colour-coded green/amber/red on a pre-purchase inspection. Vague reports that avoid saying anything definite aren't protecting the inspector, they're wasting your money.

• Every item on the checklist listed — not just fails.
• Photos of any advisory or fail item.
• Odometer reading noted, matched to vehicle record.
• VIN and plate verified against rego papers.
• Inspector's name, licence number and AIS station number on the report.
• Date, time and location of inspection.
• Clear conclusion — pass / fail / (for PPI) traffic-light rating.

Turnaround time

• Pink slip: 20–30 minutes on the car, lodged to Service NSW inside a further 5 minutes. Same-day usually available.
• Blue slip: 60–120 minutes on the car, plus workshop lead time (often 3–7 days for a booking).
• Pre-purchase: 60–90 minutes on the car, report handed over on the spot. Same-day often available in Sydney metro.

Common misconceptions

• "A pink slip is the same as a roadworthy certificate" — it's the NSW equivalent, yes; it's not identical to a Victorian roadworthy or a Queensland safety certificate. Cross-border transfers still need a blue slip.
• "I need a blue slip because my rego expired last week" — no, blue slip only kicks in past the 3-month grace period.
• "A pink slip proves the car is mechanically sound" — no, it proves the safety items pass on the day. Timing belt, transmission, engine internals aren't in scope.
• "A pre-purchase inspection gives me warranty" — no, it's a snapshot, not a warranty. It informs your decision to buy.
• "I can use my Victorian roadworthy in NSW" — no, cross-border rego needs a blue slip.

Which one to book first

If you're buying: pre-purchase inspection ($280) before you pay. Never after. If the car passes and you buy it, the seller's existing pink slip (if any) transfers with the vehicle — you don't need a new one just because of the transfer. If you're renewing your own rego: pink slip ($179), 2–4 weeks before rego expiry. If you're moving a car onto NSW plates from anywhere else: blue slip, at an AUVIS workshop.
