Pink Slip Cost NSW 2026 — How Much You Actually Pay (Full Price Guide)

The pink slip price you see online is almost never the price you pay at the driveway. Here's the honest, itemised 2026 breakdown for NSW — what Transport for NSW regulates, what workshops add on, what mobile inspectors charge, and how to spot the three most common ways stations quietly push the invoice above the quote.

Pink Slip Basics · 12 min read

"How much is a pink slip in NSW?" is the second most-searched pink slip question after "near me" — and almost every answer online gets it wrong by conflating two different numbers. There is a regulated maximum inspection fee set by Transport for NSW. There is also a station labour or call-out charge that each Authorised Inspection Station (AIS) sets itself. Add the two together and you get the price on your invoice — but only if the station bills honestly. This guide walks through both numbers, shows exactly what we charge and why, and lists the three most common tricks that push a $51 quote into an $80–$120 invoice.

The two prices in every NSW pink slip

A pink slip in NSW — officially an eSafety Check — is issued through the Authorised Inspection Scheme (AIS) run by Transport for NSW. Every AIS station, whether it's a fixed workshop or a mobile inspector, works from the same rulebook and lodges the result through the same electronic portal. What varies is how much the station charges you on top of the regulated inspection fee.

In practice, workshop pink slips in Sydney range from about $45 at a bare-bones drive-in workshop up to about $70 at a full-service centre. Mobile inspections sit higher — our flat rate is $179 inc GST — because the inspector, the diagnostic scanner and the wheel-off brake tester all travel to you. That's not an upcharge on the inspection; it's the cost of removing your Saturday morning workshop trip from the equation.

What we charge — flat $179 inc GST, everywhere

The number on our booking page is the number on your invoice. Every $179 inc GST pink slip we do covers exactly the same list of things regardless of where in Sydney, Wollongong, the Central Coast or the Blue Mountains you are:

  • The $51 regulated government inspection fee
  • The full mobile call-out — no distance surcharges inside our coverage area
  • Electronic lodgement to Service NSW before we leave the driveway
  • A free re-inspection within 14 days if anything fails on the day
  • Afterpay at online checkout — split into four instalments, no interest, no fees
  • Card, tap-and-go, Apple Pay or Google Pay at the driveway if you'd rather pay in person

No weekend loading. No public holiday loading. No fuel surcharge. No booking fee. No "electronic report fee". No "AIS lodgement fee". If it wasn't listed in the online quote, we don't invent it after the inspection.

What isn't in the price (and why we don't hide it)

A pink slip is a safety check — not a service, not a repair, not a full mechanical inspection. That's a regulatory boundary set by Transport for NSW, not a menu-limit we invented. Three things are deliberately outside the $179:

  1. On-the-spot repairs. If we find a fail item, we don't fix it at your driveway. We hand you an itemised list of exactly what needs doing, so you can take it to your own mechanic (or ours by request), then rebook the free re-inspection.
  2. Parts sales. We don't sell you tyres, brake pads, wipers, globes, filters or fluids. That's a deliberately-avoided conflict of interest — an inspector who profits from failing you can't be trusted to pass you.
  3. The registration renewal itself. The pink slip clears the safety component; the actual rego renewal is paid separately through Service NSW along with your CTP (green slip). We'll walk you through it if you're not sure how.

That's why our price stays flat. When there's no upsell path — no service package to promote, no parts markup to earn on — the inspection fee doesn't need to be a loss-leader for something else. It just needs to cover the inspector's time and vehicle.

Why workshop pink slips are usually cheaper (and what the trade-off is)

A $45 pink slip in Guildford or Auburn is real. Cheap workshop inspections exist because the workshop wants you in the door — the pink slip is the trip-wire, and the profit lives in the service or repair they hope to sell you once you're there.

That's not automatically a bad thing. If your car is due for a service anyway, bundling a pink slip with the service at a workshop you already trust is often the right call. Where it goes wrong is when a borderline item — a wiper that still clears the screen, a tyre at 2mm, a brake pad that's marginal — becomes a "fail" that conveniently needs to be fixed today. The commercial pressure is real. The regulator (Transport for NSW) audits AIS stations exactly because of it.

Mobile inspection removes that pressure entirely. We arrive with the scanner, the brake tester and the eSafety portal on a tablet, and we leave. There's no back-of-house service bay, no counter of parts, and no service advisor waiting to write up a job card. The trade-off is you pay for the visit — which is why our number is $179, not $45.

How prices differ across Sydney

The regulated government component is identical statewide. The station labour component varies by area, and roughly follows commercial rent:

AreaTypical workshop pink slipWhat drives it
Inner West / Eastern Suburbs / Northern Beaches$60 – $75Higher shop-floor rents, more European-focused workshops
North Shore / Hills District$55 – $70Family-workshop pricing, less discounting
Parramatta / Ryde / Chatswood$50 – $65Mix of chain workshops and independents
Blacktown / Liverpool / Bankstown / Cumberland$45 – $60Highest workshop density in Sydney — competitive pricing
Penrith / Campbelltown / Central Coast$50 – $65Fewer workshops per capita, less price competition

Three ways a cheap quote becomes an expensive invoice

Every year we take calls from customers who were quoted $45 or $50 over the phone and paid $85–$120 at the counter. The pattern is almost always one of these three:

1. The 'electronic lodgement' fee

Some stations quote you the raw government fee and then bolt a $10–$20 "electronic lodgement" or "AIS admin fee" onto the invoice. Electronic lodgement to Service NSW is part of the inspection — there's no separate government charge for it. Any station adding a line item for lodgement is charging you for something they're already required to do.

2. The 'diagnostic scan' upsell

A pink slip includes a check-engine light check as a standard pass/fail — if the MIL is on at the dashboard, the car fails. Some workshops treat that as an opportunity to bill you $40–$80 for a "diagnostic scan" before they'll pass you, even when the light is off. That's not part of the eSafety Check and you don't have to accept it.

3. The 'we found a fail, we'll fix it for $X' package

The invoice creep here is subtle. You booked for a pink slip, got a fail on one item, and now the workshop offers to fix it and re-issue the pink slip in one visit for a discounted bundle. Sometimes that's a legitimate convenience. Often it's a fail that a second opinion wouldn't reproduce. If the fail item costs more than $150 to fix, it's worth getting a second inspector's view before authorising the work.

The full cost of getting back on the road

The pink slip is one line item of three you'll pay when your NSW registration is due. Here's the full picture so nothing sneaks up on you:

Line itemTypical 2026 costPaid to
Pink slip (mobile flat)$179Us — direct at booking or driveway
CTP green slip$450 – $650Any NSW CTP insurer — Allianz, NRMA, QBE, GIO
Registration renewal fee + motor vehicle tax$330 – $770 depending on vehicle weightService NSW (online, app, or in person)

A pink slip is the cheapest of the three by a wide margin. It's also the only one where the price is opaque — CTP and the registration fee are both fixed at the point you pay them, but the pink slip price depends on who you book. That's the entire reason this article exists.

Afterpay, business invoicing, and other payment options

We offer four ways to pay for a pink slip:

  • Card at online booking — Visa, Mastercard, Amex. Receipt emailed instantly.
  • Afterpay at online booking — four instalments of about $45, no fees. Approved during checkout in about 30 seconds.
  • Card at the driveway — tap-and-go, chip-and-PIN, Apple Pay, Google Pay. Paid after the inspection is done.
  • Business invoice — for fleet accounts on 14-day terms. Contact us to open an account.

We don't take cash. That's a policy — it removes the "did I give you $80 or a $100?" argument and it means every job has a paper trail.

How to check if you're being overcharged

Two quick rules of thumb for spotting a bad quote:

  1. Any workshop quoting above ~$75 for a fixed drive-in pink slip on a standard car is charging above market. There's no regulatory reason for it — it's just what they charge.
  2. Any workshop quoting below the $51 government fee is either quoting you the labour component only (the government fee will "appear" at the counter) or they're operating outside the AIS scheme. Neither is what you want.

Mobile pricing sits above workshop pricing by design. You're buying the visit, not just the inspection. If mobile pricing feels expensive, workshop is the honest answer — just pick one where the "cheap pink slip" isn't a loss-leader for a service pitch you didn't book for.

The short version

  • Regulated NSW government inspection fee for a car: $51.
  • Workshop pink slip in Sydney: typically $45–$70 all-in.
  • Our mobile pink slip: flat $179 inc GST, everywhere, no surcharges.
  • Free re-inspection within 14 days if you fail.
  • Afterpay available on the $179.
  • Watch for "lodgement fees", "diagnostic scan" upsells, and same-day repair bundles that turn a cheap quote into an expensive invoice.
Common questions

Frequently asked.

How much is a pink slip in NSW in 2026?
The Transport for NSW regulated government inspection fee for a light vehicle is $51. Workshops typically charge $45–$70 all-in (including their labour on top of the government fee). Mobile inspectors like us charge more because we travel to you — our flat rate is $179 inc GST, which covers the call-out, the inspection, electronic Service NSW lodgement and a free re-inspection.
How much does a pink slip cost in NSW for a motorcycle or trailer?
The regulated government inspection fee is $28 for motorcycles, $26 for trailers without brakes, and $40 for trailers with brakes. Station charges vary on top. We don't inspect motorcycles or trailers mobile — those categories need a fixed AIS station.
Why is a mobile pink slip more expensive than a workshop one?
Because you're paying for the inspector, scanner, brake tester and portal to travel to your driveway, not just for the inspection itself. Workshops recoup overhead from the flow of other jobs through the bay; mobile inspectors recover it in the call-out. The trade-off is you skip the workshop trip and get a same-day slot at your address 7 days a week.
Are there any hidden fees on the day?
Not with us. The invoiced amount matches the online quote — $179 inc GST, no weekend loading, no fuel surcharge, no "electronic lodgement" fee, no booking fee. If a station adds fees at the counter that weren't in the quote, ask them to itemise them against the Transport for NSW fee schedule.
What if my car fails — do I pay again?
Not for the re-inspection, provided you rebook it within 14 days. You only pay for the parts and labour to fix the failed item — through your own mechanic or ours by request, not automatically through us. The recheck itself is at no extra cost.
Can I use Afterpay for the pink slip fee?
Yes. Afterpay is offered at online checkout on the $179 inc GST amount, split into four instalments of about $45 with no interest and no fees. Approval usually takes about 30 seconds inside the checkout flow.
Do I have to pay before the inspection?
Only if you book online. If you book by phone we take payment at the driveway once the inspection is done — card, tap-and-go, Apple Pay or Google Pay. We don't take cash.
Is the pink slip cost different in 2026 compared to previous years?
The regulated government inspection fee for a light vehicle was $51 in 2025 and remains $51 in 2026. Fee changes are announced by Transport for NSW when they happen; we update this page (and our booking page) within a day of any change.
What's the cheapest pink slip in NSW?
The cheapest workshop pink slips in Sydney sit around $45 at bare-bones drive-in workshops in Western Sydney. That's a legitimate price, but the cheap number depends on the workshop having a service upsell path — worth being aware of if you're just there for the check. If you want the cheapest honest price with no upsell path, a mobile inspection like ours at $179 is more expensive per inspection but cheaper per hour (no travel time on your part).
Does a pink slip cost include CTP (green slip) or registration?
No. The pink slip is just the safety inspection — you still pay for the CTP green slip (about $450–$650) and the Service NSW registration renewal fee and motor vehicle tax (about $330–$770) separately when you renew. The pink slip usually costs the least of the three by a wide margin.
