Honda CR-V Pink Slip NSW — Known Fails, Cost & Mobile Booking
Every Honda CR-V has its own short list of pink-slip trouble spots. Here's what we see fail on the 2013–2022 generation, what you can pre-check in ten minutes, and how the inspection actually runs.

The Honda CR-V is one of the more common vehicles we inspect across Sydney, and it fails on a predictable pattern once it hits five years old. That's the age NSW starts requiring an annual eSafety Check, so the first pink slip is often the one that catches out owners who haven't kept up with the small stuff.
Nothing on this page is a substitute for the actual inspection — but it will help you avoid a fail and a re-check trip. Read it before your renewal window opens (it opens 6 weeks before your rego expiry) and you'll go into the appointment with a much clearer picture.
Known trouble spots on the 2013–2022 CR-V
The following items show up on our fail sheets more often on this vehicle than on the average car we inspect. None are dealbreakers, all are cheap to fix if you catch them before your renewal deadline:
- Front pad wear on city-driven CR-Vs
- Windscreen chips
- Rear wiper perish
- Numberplate globes
Ten-minute pre-check
Do this in your driveway with the engine idling and someone helping you from outside. It won't replace the inspection but it will spot the majority of preventable fails on this model.
- All four indicators front and rear — walk around and watch them
- Both brake lights and the centre high-mount light
- High beam, low beam, reverse light, numberplate lights
- Windscreen — check for chips or cracks in the driver's line of sight
- Wipers and washer — full sweep, no streaks or torn edges
- Tyres — 1.5 mm tread minimum, no cord showing, correct load rating
- Seatbelts — retract cleanly, no fraying, buckles latch firmly
- Handbrake — holds the car on a slight incline
- Horn works, mirrors intact and adjustable
- No warning lights on the dash after startup
What a pink slip actually covers
The NSW eSafety Check is not a mechanical health check. It's a road-safety inspection — brakes, steering, suspension, tyres, lights, seatbelts, wipers, windscreen, mirrors, structure and exhaust. If your CR-V has an intermittent gearbox issue or a fuel-economy quirk, the pink slip won't flag it and it doesn't need to.
If you're worried about broader mechanical condition — especially if you're about to sell — book a pre-purchase inspection instead. That's a much deeper look at drivetrain, cooling, electronics and structural integrity, and it comes with a written report you can share with a buyer or a mechanic.
Buying a used one? Read this first
1.5 turbo (2018+) had oil dilution issues in cold climates — less of a concern in Sydney but worth checking oil level and smell.
A $280 pre-purchase inspection buys you the truth before you sign anything. We inspect the vehicle where it's parked — dealer yard, private sale driveway or auction holding compound — and hand over the written report on the spot. That report has stopped more than one buyer from making an expensive mistake.
Book a mobile pink slip
We come to your driveway, garage, or workplace 7 days a week between 7am and 7pm. Flat $179 inc GST including electronic lodgement to Service NSW. If anything fails, the re-inspection is free within 14 days.
Frequently asked.
- Does the Honda CR-V need a pink slip every year?
- Yes, once it's 5 years old at renewal, an annual pink slip is required for NSW rego renewal. Under 5 years old, no inspection is required for renewal.
- What's the most common CR-V pink slip fail?
- In our data, it's tyres (worn inside edge from cornering) followed by a brake light globe. Both are inexpensive fixes if you catch them before booking.
- Can you inspect a modified CR-V?
- Cosmetic mods are fine. Structural mods, lift kits, or engine changes usually require engineer certification and a blue slip — not a pink slip. If in doubt, call us before you book.
- Do you do a pre-purchase inspection on the CR-V?
- Yes — flat $280 inc GST, mobile across all of Sydney, Wollongong, Blue Mountains and Central Coast. Written report handed over on the spot.
