Pink Slip Basics · 3 min read

The most common misunderstanding we hear: 'my car is nearly new, I've got the pink slip warning email, do I need one?' Almost always no. Here's the rule and the small handful of exceptions.

The rule

For a normal passenger car under 4.5 tonnes GVM, an annual pink slip is required from the point the vehicle is 5 years old at renewal. Under that age, no inspection is needed to renew rego — you just pay the CTP green slip and the registration fee.

Exceptions

Taxis, hire cars and rideshare vehicles (Uber/Ola/etc.) are inspected annually regardless of age. Vehicles over 4.5t GVM and heavy trailers have separate inspection regimes. If you've made structural modifications to a new vehicle, a blue slip may still be required to re-register.

Why the reminder email?

Service NSW sends the same reminder to every vehicle. The reminder covers the CTP green slip renewal (which you do need) — the pink slip line is generic template text and doesn't apply to under-5s. Read the actual conditions in the email, not just the headline.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

Does it matter if it's 4 years 11 months old?
It's tested against age at renewal. If the vehicle turns 5 during the coming rego period, most authorities require the pink slip.
What if I use my car for Uber?
Rideshare requires an annual pink slip regardless of age. Book it as part of your accreditation compliance.
