Car Inspection Sydney 2026 — Which of the Four Types Do You Actually Need?

Search "car inspection Sydney" and Google returns a wall of results that all sound identical. In reality, four different products get lumped under that phrase, and the wrong one solves nothing. Here's the quick decision tree, followed by the detail on each, and the common mistakes that cost people time and money every week.

The 30-second decision tree

1. Renewing rego on a car 5+ years old? You need a pink slip — flat $179 mobile.
2. Buying a used car and want an independent opinion before you hand over money? You need a pre-purchase inspection — flat $280.
3. Rego has been expired more than 3 months, or the car is coming from interstate, or it's had a written-off status? You need a blue slip (AUVIS workshop only).
4. Selling privately and the buyer wants "a report"? A pre-purchase inspection is what they mean — you can book it in your name and hand them the report.
5. Insurance or lender asked for a "roadworthy certificate"? In NSW that doesn't exist as a separate document — they usually want a pre-purchase inspection report.

1. Pink slip — annual rego inspection (flat $179)

Officially the NSW eSafety Check. Required every year to renew registration on any light vehicle 5 or more years old at renewal. It's a safety check, not a mechanical health check — it doesn't look at engine condition, service history or resale value. The inspector confirms lights, brakes, tyres, steering, seatbelts and structural rust meet Transport for NSW criteria, then lodges the result electronically. Takes 20–30 minutes.

2. Pre-purchase inspection — buying a used car (flat $280)

A pre-purchase inspection is what you book when you're about to hand money to a stranger for a car. It's a mechanical, cosmetic and documentation review that takes 60–90 minutes and produces a written report with photos and a clear buy / negotiate / walk verdict.

Our flat rate is $280 inc GST and covers a computer diagnostic scan, brakes and suspension, engine bay and underbody, tyres and paint depth readings (to spot resprays that indicate crash repair), a road test, a PPSR check for finance/write-off/stolen, and the written report handed over on the spot. Bookable at a private seller's address, a dealer's yard, or an auction lot.

3. Blue slip — unregistered vehicle inspection

A blue slip is the bigger, formal inspection required when a car has to be re-registered rather than renewed. Trigger cases: rego expired more than three months; interstate car transferring to NSW rego; a repaired write-off; VIN, engine number or major structural changes. Blue slips can only be performed at Authorised Unregistered Vehicle Inspection Stations (AUVIS) — they are not a mobile service anywhere in NSW.

Blue slips cost more than pink slips (typically $78–$120 at the AUVIS station on top of any required repairs) and involve identity verification, VIN checks and a more detailed structural inspection. Blue slip validity is only 42 days from issue — you must complete the rego application inside that window. If you're not sure whether you need a pink or a blue slip, check your Service NSW account first — it tells you which one is due.

4. Roadworthy report / condition report

Occasionally an insurer, a lender or a buyer will ask for "a roadworthy certificate" or "a condition report". In NSW, roadworthy is not a formal document that exists separately from the pink slip or blue slip — the term is borrowed from Victoria's roadworthy certificate (RWC). What the requester almost always actually wants is a pre-purchase inspection report, which covers condition, mechanical health and safety in one document.

If you get asked for a roadworthy, forward the request to us and we'll confirm which of the above products actually satisfies what the requester wants — this saves you booking (and paying for) something that doesn't answer the question.

Common mistakes we see

• Booking a pink slip when rego has already been expired more than 3 months — the system won't accept the lodgement; you needed a blue slip.
• Booking a pink slip for a car under 5 years old — no inspection required; you can renew rego directly on Service NSW.
• Buying a car interstate and assuming a pink slip will bring it onto NSW rego — it won't; that's a blue slip job at an AUVIS station.
• Skipping a pre-purchase inspection to "save $280" on a $25,000 car, then finding out about an $8,000 engine problem after settlement.
• Assuming a workshop's free 'safety check' with a service is a pink slip — it isn't unless the workshop is an authorised eSafety station and lodges it electronically.
• Booking two pink slips a few months apart hoping to "stack" the validity — only the most recent lodgement is active, so the earlier one is wasted.
• Booking a pink slip on a heavy vehicle over 4.5 tonnes — you need HVIS (Heavy Vehicle Inspection Scheme), not AIS.
